- John Christian purchased the drawing from Christie's Sale: The Neil Wilson Collection: A Romantic vision. He retained the invoice, sale no: 9305928, 4 September 2014,which provides the following information:
"Lot 161 Sir Edward John Poynter Bt. P.R.A. R.W.S. (1826-1919) Study for an arm for[sic] Michelangelo and Phidias with studio stamp (lower centre) charcoal and white chalk on brown paper."
Acquired by The British Museum in a gold frame with a Christie's label which reads:
"Lot 161, The Neil Wilson Collection: A Romantic Vision (9305928) 4 September 2014 (1)
Sir Edward John Poynter. Bt. P.R.A. R.W.S. (1826-1919) Study of an arm for [sic] Michelangelo and Phidias..."
Campbell Wilson label on the back with the following information:
"Sir John Edward Poynter (1836-1919) Study for an arm from Michelangelo and Phidias."
