- Acquisition notes
- Formerly in the collection of Legros's pupil George Howard, purchased by Alexander Stirling in Spring 1995.
Acquired by the British Museum glued to a mount board, unevenly cut in a portfolio labelled "Tirage special à dix exemplaires 1876. R. Gueraut. 2 Orris Villas Hammersmith." With reproductions mounted of Legros's 'Portrait of Gambetta,' 'The Close of the Day', 'L'Incendie' and 'La mort et le Bûcheron.' With a note in John Christian's handwriting which provides the following information:
"14 etchings by Alphonse Legros, from the collection of his pupil George Howard, Earl of Carlisle. Bought from Alec Stirling Jan-March 1995."
The portfolio and reproductions have been retained in the British Museum's collections.
The mounter and publisher Robert Guéraut built up a collection of Legros's work. Several of Legros and Howard's works in the John Christian collection were presented in his distinctive grey/green mounts with the artist's name printed beneath the work.
While "Tirage special" might be translated to suggest Guéraut was the printer, it is possible that he was the London based publisher of this evidently limited edition folio of works.
