- According to Stephen Ongpin's description this drawing is a preparatory study in reverse for Legros' etching 'Le joueur de viole' c.1868. Sheet bears the artist's dedication to the printseller Marseille Holloway (d.1910) who published a number of Legros' etchings.

- John Christian purchased the drawing from Stephen Ongpin Fine Art and retained the invoice No: SRO 163, dated July 9th 2009.
Acquired by the British Museum on a secondary mount with a layer of glue around the drawing. Annotated verso "FAS 16992" With a Christie's label with the following reference Stock RN001, Line 47, Dept OMD/4.
The invoice provides the following information:
"262 Alphonse Legros Dijon 1837- 1911 Watford
The viol player (joueur de viole) Brown ink, brown wash and black chalk, extensively heightened with white, on buff paper, Signed and dedicated a mon ami Holloway./ A. Legros in pencil at the lower left corner of the backing sheet."
