- Curator's comments
- Plate lost. One of Clarke's earliest prints, produced in the year he swapped the Lancaster School of Art for London and the Royal College. The composition is an elaboration of a design that appeared on the left edge of a composite plate also made in 1948 (LeGrove 1; see 2018,7075.1), which also contained the germ for 'The Ancient Mariner' (LeGrove 2; see 2018,7075.2). Before printing this and another proof, Clarke incised the outlines of a plant form and cloud (?) into the wet ink filling the dark 'spandrels' in the top corners.
