- Curator's comments
- Drawn after David Le Marchand's ivory bust of Newton from 1718 which was donated to the BM in 1765 by Matthew Raper (1765,0629.1; MCN3828). The sculpture is usually on display in Gallery 46.
This drawing was presented with another, of Sir John Hawkins (see 2018,7033.2). In his manuscript catalogue of his collection (photocopy in BM P&D Library, Cd.3.4.VII), L G Duke noted that he had purchased 13 portrait drawings by J T Smith in lots 258 & 261 at Hodgson's on 19 June 1952 at the sale of the collection of Johnsoniana of the late A. H. Hallam Murray. 'The collection was originally formed by John Thomas Smith, and the catalogue stated that all the watercolours were his work. I paid £11 through Spink's for the two lots - rather less than £1 each.' The following list of the 13 drawings is taken from Duke's manuscript catalogue of his collection which notes to whom he sold each drawing (the catalogue contains further information about each drawing, including size, medium, who copied from, etc, not recorded here but available in the copy in P&D library):
