- Impressions from this plate in the BM collection are 1885,0711.58 and 1932,0513.1. For Richmond's engraving, see the article by Campbell Dodgson in 'Print Collectors Quarterly', XVII 1930, pp.353-61. See 1932,0513.1 for further comment.
Richmond describes working on the plate in his account book:
"April 1827 16th Began an engraving of Christ the good Shepherd ['at Shoreham' added later]" (quoted in Raymond Lister, "George Richmond, a Critical Biography", London, 1981). The engraving was never completed.
A drawing by Samuel Palmer showing Richmond at work on this plate by candlelight, with burin and scraper in the foreground, is in the collection of the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens (68.25). The drawing is dated "Septr [9?] 1827", and inscribed in Welby Sherman's hand "WS from GR" and, in Richmond's hand,"Portrait of Geo Richmond engraving the Shepherd".
