Curator's comments
Compiled by the Havell family, the album contains mostly British and Continental landscapes and architectural views; some views in India and South America; some orientalist views; historical, biblical, and allegorical scenes; some portraits; in the back 7 tracings of Chinese figures representing various social groups and presumably ceremonial scenes; a photograph of an aloe plant pasted inside the back cover. Most engravings produced by Frederick James Havell (1801-1840/41), or after paintings by his older brother William Havell (1782-1857); reproductive prints by FJ Havell after paintings by Domenichino, David Wilkie, Claude Lorrain, Rembrandt, Durer. A number of prints by other printmakers including Benjamin Winkles’s “Continental Cathedrals”. Also some lithographs and some works titled in graphite. Works appear to follow no apparent order and many do not bear the name of the engraver.
