- This screenprint comes from the fourth of four portfolios of prints by Richard Tipping titled 'The Sydney Morning', volumes 1-4, published between 1989 and 1994. It is one of 14 screenprints included in volume 4, which was published in 1994. In a note included in the portfolio the artist has written of this work and 'HOHO (OHOH) #2' (2014,7088.10.5) : "The typeface is called Frankfurter, nicely rounded and jolly, as you'd expect with an image related to Santa Claus and the consumer rituals of Christmas. But there's a problem. The cheerful HOHO greeting is answered by its worried echo OHOH. Placed into a grid of 4x4, the HOHOs and OHOHs start interacting, reinforced by the colour relationships, and literally bounce the eye. This design is one which will suit large-scale installation, with each letter up to one metre in size made of powder-coated metal in brilliant hues. Meanwhile, I'm reminded of the Tokyo department store which had a window display at Christmas time in 1985, featuring a big wooden crucifix to which was nailed Father Christmas. To a Japanese sensibility, I was enigmatically told, this made perfect sense."
All the prints in this volume were screenprinted by Richard Tipping and Michael Lenehan on Magnani Pescia paper for Thorny Devil Press in Wangi Wangi, Lake Macquarie, Australia. The BM copy is numbered 24 in pencil on the frontispiece/colophon. The volume was printed in an edition of between 80 and 92 copies but only the first 60 were boxed in sets.
