- Curator's comments
- One of 62 original lithographs by 28 international artists in the unbound artist book 'One Cent Life' by Walasse Ting, edited by Sam Francis (1964) (2014,7080.1(1-62)). Printed on page 52, this lithograph accompanies text from Ting's poem 'Dans la Rue Saint Denis', part of which is printed on page 53.
This lithograph is printed on the same sheet as a lithograph by Pierre Alechinsky (2014,7080.1.21; p. 61). Text from 'Dans la Rue Saint Denis' and an image from French advertising is printed on the right side of the verso (p. 51), and Ting's poem 'So Many Lonely' is printed on the left side (p. 62).
In an interview with Poppy Gandler Orchier in 1991, Indiana described how his experience of working as an assistant at the Ryerson Library at the Art Institute of Chicago and lead to an interest in print: "Each day I'd be putting Rembrandts and Dürers back in the drawer and that intimate contact with the best and greatest prints that have ever been done had a great impact on me" (Susan Sheehan, Robert Indiana Prints: A Catalogue Raisonné 1951-1991 (New York: Susan Sheehan Gallery, 1991), p. 11).
While studying at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1953-54, an interest in illustrated books led Indiana to print his own poetry and illustrate it with his own lithographs (Sheehan, p. 11).
