- This print is the sixth of a portfolio entitled 'Zehn Holzschnitte von Schmidt-Rottluff' comprising ten woodcuts plus a woodcut table of contents that was published by J.B. Neumann, Berlin in 1919 in an edition of 75. This impression comes originally from the portfolio numbered '31'.
This print comes from the Burkamp Collection, Rostock. It was stored at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Rostock. It was later appropriated by the German Democratic Republic and restored to the heir of Burkamp in 1996. Towards the end of the Second World War, as the Russians advanced, the Burkamp family fled west, leaving their prints in the warehouse of the Rostock Museum, in what became East Germany after the war. The East German government instituted a policy of restricting the private ownership of works of art and appropriated all works of art left in museums by private individuals and gave them to the museums. When Germany was reunited, the unified German government returned to their rightful owners art objects that had been appropriated by the East German government.
