Text from Stephen Coppel, 'Imaging Ulysses: Richard Hamilton', London, BM, published by the British Council, 2002, cat.no.83:
Immortalized as Buck Mulligan in Ulysses, the Dubliner Oliver St John Gogarty was a young medical student at Oxford with literary pretensions to 'Hellenise' (U, 7) Ireland when Joyce briefly shared digs with him in the Martello tower in 1904. Aquatint and stippling on the face were applied by Hamilton over the soft-ground outlines traced from the preparatory drawing (cat.65).
