- Curator's comments
- Text from Stephen Coppel, 'Imaging Ulysses: Richard Hamilton', London, BM, published by the British Council, 2002, cat.no.18:
Hamilton's second attempt to illustrate this episode in 1949 remained unfinished. When he returned to it in 1981 preparatory to making his intaglio plate (cat.39), only the positions of the figures from the 1949 study were retained. As Hamilton explained, 'I completely revamped it to include the concept of a developing flow of styles from earliest to modern' (reprinted in Collected Words 1953-1982, London, 1982, p.109).
