- Curator's comments
- The artist's books were all self-published and originally issued individually in three series: 'Galileo Works', 1977 (comprising 10 books), 'Dyspepsia Works', 1979 (11 books) and 'Blue Books', 1981 (7 books) between 1977 and 1981. Several of the books in the collected boxed set are signed, dated and numbered on the inside of the front page and the first series is numbered sequentially in pencil on the back page upper left corner. Applebroog explored issues of gender politics and often ambiguous relationships and power struggles in these works. She called each of her books 'performances' reproducing her simple paintings of enigmatic figures in bold outlines. The books were mailed out to curators, critics, friends, acquaintances and other artists at the time in a project which combined elements of mail art, artists' books and performance art.
