As a student in the fifties Auerbach along with Leon Kossoff spent many hours sketching after the paintings in the National Gallery. In 1995 his work was honoured by this institution in the exhibition 'Frank Auerbach at the National Gallery: working after the Masters.'
This drawing is one of many made after the Rubens' painting while preparing for the show. The artist has said that looking at such works in the gallery serves to 'to remind myself of what quality is and what is actually demanded of painting'.
