- Curator's comments
- Beaumont's Grand Tour (he travelled with his wife) began in 1782, when they travelled to Switzerland to spend the summer before travelling on to Bologna, Florence and then arriving in Rome early October. Beaumont spent most of his time in Italy drawing and studying with various artists including John Robert Cozens. They were in Naples for a visit from 8 - 23 March 1783, spending a great deal of time with their old friend, Thomas Jones. Many of Beaumont's drawings from this time reflect Jones's compositions. See F. Owen and D Blayney Brown, 'A collector of Genius', Yale 1988, pp. 48-54, including other views of Naples and Tivoli from the Beaumont Collection.
