- Curator's comments
- This is no.2 in the catalogue of five 'tailles-douce en tableau' compiled by F.Jiméno, published in the BSHAF for 2008. Landry announced this 'crucifix' in the Mercure for March 1679, at the same time as a Nativity after Pietro da Cortona. Jiméno knew of two impressions of the print, one in the chateau de la Verdière in Var, the other in a manor in Schleswig-Holstein. He was not aware of the later edition published by Bonnart.
The print was acquired by the donors at the same time as another which is closely related in size and style, "Christ Crowned with Thorns" by François Langot after Van Dyck (New Hollstein 521g), which was also published by Landry and later reissued by Bonnart (Jiméno cat.4).
Alastair Laing suggested that the present print may be based on a painting by Grégoire Huret.

- This print and the related one of "Christ crowned with thorns" were assumed to have come to Nostell Priory with the d'Hervart family collection bequeathed in1779 to Sabine, wife of Sir Rowland Winn. The d'Hervarts were Huguenot exiles from France.
