This print was made on 4 March 1937 in Paris. Picasso scratched the back of the copperplate with the annotation: '4 mars 37.III'.
-
Picasso concluded the 'Vollard Suite' with three portraits of Vollard (VS 98-100). He produced the three portraits in one day, 4 March 1937, thereby rounding up the 'Vollard Suite' to 100 plates. For Vollard this made the Suite more marketable as a commodity. The portraits, like three abrupt full-stops, bring to an end the continuous narrative stream of the Vollard Suite that fused elements of Picasso's personal life with a changing set of scenarios that was always in a state of metamorphosis.
