The chronology of Gionima's graphic works is unclear , but comparison with another drawing in the collection, 2011,7033.1, suggests the present one is the later of the two and post-dates his training with Giuseppe Maria Crespi that began around 1719. Crespi's influence can be felt from the emphasis on lighting effects, realised with great sensitivity with layered washes and white heightening. The technical sophistication of the drawing, perhaps a finished work in its own right, can be compared to examples of his work at Windsor Castle such as the 'Triumph of David' (O. Kurz, 'Bolognese Drawings of the XVII & XVIII Centuries: in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle', London, 1955,
no. 281, pl. 42).
