- Curator's comments
- Craxton and Freud had studios in a maisonette in Abercorn Place, St John's Wood from 1942 to 1944, when this portrait was produced. In 1984 Craxton had an exhibition of his works on paper with Lucian Freud, Michael Ayrton and John Minton at Christopher Hull Gallery, London. Ian Collins, the biographer of Craxton, in an email to Hugo Chapman (7/12/12) regarding the present drawing wrote: '[it] is undoubtedly a Freud portrait of Craxton from the period of their closest friendship - a work of art which John [Craxton] owned for 40 years'.
The drawing can be compared with the more finished drawing of Craxton made by Freud around 1942 (reproduced as no. 34 in Sebastian Smee and Richard Calvocoressi, Lucian Freud on Paper, New York: Rizzoli, 2009).
