- Curator's comments
- According to The Lennox-Boyd database, this is from the second volume of the series 'Engravings from the Pictures of Sir Joshua Reynolds', though not listed by Whitman. However, if the pencil annotation is correct it would fall in the third volume which covers sitters wtih surnames beginning 'H' to ''R'. He describes also other states, following Whitman's pattern: (i) proof before letters; (iii) with 'From an unfinished Picture' added to the inscription; (iv) 'Proof' erased; (v) republished state. This state would count as (ii) and would be an exception to Whitman's pattern.
The portrait is similar to that Reynolds made of Mrs Wood in 1757 (Mannings 1923), now in a Private Collection. The latter has the sitter resting her chin on her right hand. If this is after an unfinished painting, it may be after a study for that painting.
