Curator's comments
The figure is extracted from the composition by Charles Le Brun of Alexander standing before the kneeling family of Darius (painting at Versailles); this figure is a combination of the second and the third women in the line (information supplied by Nicholas Stogdon, via email May 2014). Smith's may be a republication of an earlier plate. Other impressions: Edinburgh; Haddington albums, vol. 2, p. 240; London NPG; Plymouth; CLB, later impression than this with losses from two corners
