Kitaj's method of multiple layering reached a high point with the last prints produced with Chris Prater in the mid-1970s. Here Kitaj inserts a photograph of the 1950s French film idol Gérard Philipe, juxtaposed with an illustration from Mrs Beeton's 'Book of Household Management' of different types of consommé with the names of the French recipes removed. Also reproduced are two prints by the academic French artist Alphonse Legros, depicting the French sculptor Jules Dalou and a French peasant.
