The ludic elements in Kitaj's work are often overlooked, but he obviously enjoyed playing around with image and text. In this print he deliberately mixed up the captions and images of artists so that they do not relate to each other. The title probably relates to the fact that these artists were no longer fashionable and were therefore considered passé.
