- Curator's comments
- This drawing was made while Rego was living in Portugal and making periodic visits to England in the early 1960s. From around 1961 she began to produce expressionistic, gestural works on paper which were directly influenced by Dubuffet and which she has described were often 'about obeying authority, disobeying authority, [and] mocking authority' (see her commentaries in 'Paula Rego' (exh. cat.), with essays by Marco Livingstone and Robert Hughes and commentaries by Paula Rego, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, 25 Sept.-30 Dec. 2007, p. 249, and her drawings from 1960-61 reproduced on pp.28-9).
