- Curator's comments
- Thorvaldsen commissioned Overbeck in 1814 (CHECK) to make drawings of his stucco relief frieze of 'Alexander the Great's entry into Babylon' (1812) in the Palazzo Quirinale in Rome. For the frieze, see G.Bott and H. Spielmann, 'Küstlerleben in Rom, Bertel Thorvaldsen ...und seine deutschen Freunde', exh.cat Nürnberg, 1992, p.280, pl.1, p.407, no.2.47.
For an early drawing (1818) of his wife, Nina, as a study for the figure of Ruth, see Mitchell B. Frank, 'Central European Drawings from the National Gallery of Canada' Ottawa, 2008, no. 37.
