James Northcote, "The life of Sir Joshua Reynolds, LL D. F.R.S. F.S.A. &c. Late President of the Royal Academy. Comprising original anecdotes of many distinguished persons, his contemporaries; and a brief analysis of his discourses" (London, Henry Colburn) 1818, second edition, revised and augmented, vol. II of II; containing 2 illustrations: 1. Frontispiece with stipple portrait of James Northcote after John Jackson; 2. Grieving female figure leaning on a tomb, cherub next to her, palette and brushes above, verse by Virgil 'Succedet fama, vivusque per ora feretur' on plaque. Including facsimile letter from Joshua Reynolds to Northcote from 1776, vignette on title-page with a cherub painting 'vol. II' on a tablet, palette and brushes to the right, another vignette at the end on the book with 'End of the life' on a palette with brushes, appendix qieh the 'Memoir of William Gandy', list of Reynolds' paintings, and index. Bound in half-leather with blind tooling on cover and gold embossed lettering on spine, including preface, list of plates for both volumes and errata at the end.
