- Curator's comments
- For this type of print, which survives into the late XVIIIc, see Sheila O'Connell, 'The Popular Print in England', BM 1999, p.234 note 4, where two English versions in the BM are listed. This undated plate (circa 1650 according to David Paisey; not listed in IFF) is a good early impression of the composition by Deruet; the BM has another version made in Rome in 1617 by Philippe Thomassin (1869,0410.2498.*). There is another type credited to Ambrosius Francken. All depend on an engraving by Adriaen Collaert after Marten de Vos of c.1581 (Hollstein 1147).
The classic article on the subject is by Rudolf Berliner in 'Die Christliche Kunst' of 1933, and more recently by Rainer Heinrich (in the RDK under 'Gericht'). Both are cited by Maria Goldoni in an article on the subject in Alberto Milano (ed.), 'Commercio delle stampe e diffusione delle immagini nei secoli XVIII e XIX', Rovereto 2008, pp.381-409.
