- Curator's comments
- "Anne had contracted an eye infection resulting in a cornea replacement" (Arikha's e-mailed comment to Felicity Kerr, 29.8.04). Executed in Paris.
See also Duncan Thomson, 'Arikha', Phaidon, London, 1994, p.102, repr., and Pierre Cabanne, 'Arikha en noir et blanc', Le Matin, Paris 8 August 1980.
Arikha, later in the same year, painted an oil of Anne seated, wearing a coat and sunglasses, entitled 'Back from the Eye Clinic', 12 November 1979 (reproduced in 'Avigdor Arikha: Selected Paintings 1953-1997', The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, November 1998-February 1999). Arikha commented in the accompanying Israel Museum catalogue: "In the spring of 1979 Anne contracted a serious viral eye infection (see the ink drawing 'Anne, Back from the Eye Clinic', dated 30 April 1979). This painting was done half a year later, when she was still ill, on her return home after treatment".
