- Curator's comments
- "This drawing was executed in the studio of 19 Avenue de Tourville (the painter's residence in 1964-69) with the Japanese fountain-brush and thick sumi ink. Beckett is seated, after dinner, listening to music, a glass of wine in front of him" (Arikha's e-mailed comment to Felicity Kerr, 29.8.04).
Arikha and Beckett first met in Paris in 1956 and became very close friends. Arikha spoke of Beckett as a "lighthouse and a father figure" (twenty-three years the artist's senior) in a BBC Omnibus programme about Avigdor Arikha, shown on 27.10.92. When Beckett died Arikha felt unable to work for a considerable period of time, and among the first works he produced after the event was 'Sam's Spoon' (1990) and later a pastel showing a photograph of the writer in the background (1991).
Arikha illustrated several of Beckett's texts, for example 'Nouvelles et textes pour rien', Les Editions de Minuit, Paris, 1958, with six pen and ink drawings; 'L'Issue', George Visat, Paris, 1968 with six colour aquatints belonging to his abstract period; 'The North', Enitharmon Press, London, 1972 with three etchings; and 'Au loin un oiseau', The Double Elephant Press, New York, 1973 with five sugar-lift aquatints [2004-6-2-11(1-5)]. He also designed the set for 'Endgame', directed by Alvin Epstein at the Samuel Beckett Theater, Theater Row, New York, 1984. Beckett also prefaced several of Arikha's exhibition catalogues.
See 'Samuel Beckett by Avigdor Arikha: A Tribute to Samuel Beckett on his 70th Birthday', V&A, February-March 1976. A graphite drawing of Beckett from 1971 by Arikha is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
