An intimate image of the Australian performance artist Leigh Bowery (1961–1994) at rest. Bowery was a frequent sitter for Freud from 1990, after the artist saw him performing in the window of the Anthony d’Offay Gallery, London in 1988. This impression is an artist’s proof. The edition of thirty was printed by Marc Balakjian at Studio Prints, London and published by Matthew Marks, New York.
Walker recalled deciding to buy this print just an hour after it was hung at the Marlborough Gallery on the day that Bowery died of an AIDS-related illness at the age of thirty-three (New Year’s Eve, 1994). It was the last impression that the gallery had available.
