Text from 'Living with art: The Alexander Walker collection' (British Museum Press, 2020):
Schmidt-Rottluff was a founder member of Die Brücke (The Bridge), a group of German Expressionist painters and printmakers founded in Dresden in 1905. Other members included Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938), Erich Heckel (1883–1970) and Emil Nolde (1867–1956). The group played an important role in reviving the making of woodcuts. The block for this print was cut in 1915, two years after Die Brücke disbanded. It was printed by W. Drugulin, Leipzig in 1919 for the first volume of the periodical 'Genius: Zeitschrift für werdende und alte Kunst' (Genius: Journal of Emerging and Traditional Art), which was published by Kurt Wolff Verlag in Leipzig. Walker purchased this impression the year after he saw an exhibition of Schmidt-Rottluff’s work at the Kirchner Museum in Davos, during a ski trip.
