Label text from 2008-9 Sept.-Jan BM, British Sculptors' Drawings
Whiteread's fascination with floors is demonstrated by her series of floor casts that she has been making since the early nineties. The artist explains: 'I always thought they were like the bowels of the house, like the hidden corners no one ever sees'. Her drawings of this subject are an obvious extension of this interest.
Text from 'Living with art: The Alexander Walker collection' (British Museum Press, 2020):
One of a group of drawings that Whiteread made while on a residency programme in Berlin in 1992–3, based on the pattern of the parquet floor in her apartment (Ann Gallagher, ‘Drawing Form’, in Allegra Pesenti, Ann Gallagher and Rachel Whiteread, 'Rachel Whiteread Drawings', Los Angeles: Hammer Museum, 2010, pp. 27–37 (pp. 27–9)). Whiteread is best known for her sculptural casts of architectural forms in concrete, plaster, resin and rubber. When she made this drawing, she had already begun to cast floors. Walker hung it in his bathroom, where it matched the pink of his sink and bath. He told John Austin in 1999 that the gouache had been ‘much admired – and envied’.
