- David Brown bought this work at Bruce Tippett's first solo exhibition. This was in 1958, at Lords Gallery, run by Philip Granville. Brown owned three works by Tippett.
Tippett saw Japanese brush paintings for the first time at the British Museum in 1957, and claimed "they awoke something in me" (England & Co 1992 catalogue).
