- Curator's comments
- The artist explained his use of sketch-books as he donated 2003-5-30-9 & 10, writing on the 29th of April 2003:
"I always carry a pocket-sized sketchbook. Usually they fill up in a month but sometimes I go through more than one a week, particularly if I am away from my home/studio when they become my only creative activity. This one [2003-5-30-9] I used on my second trip to the USA in 1994. The drawings were not done to use for future work although there are individual watercolours of the same subject that I completed at the same time.
"The larger book [2003-5-30-10] contains drawings I did at Brockwell Lido in Brixton. I used to go every day for a while and swim and draw all morning. I made some larger paintings from these drawings (it was too public a space to do anything but draw furtively in a small book). Rob Whittle bought the largest of these following its exhibition in the RWA autumn show in 2002. Helen Leigh bought the other large version and a smaller one was used for the card for my 1998 solo show at the Redfern"
