- Curator's comments
- The 'Kuhturm' was built on the outskirts of Leipzig to watch cattle grazing on the meadows; it was demolished in 1939. A comparable landscape sketch of 1785, 'Im Rosenthal' is in the Ratjen collection. Anke Fröhlich compares the view with drawings of the same tower made by Christoph Nathe, with whom Reinhart shared lodgings in Leipzig in 1785 (see A. Fröhlich, Christoph Nathe 1753-1806: Monographie und Werkverzeichnis der Handzeichnungen und Druckgraphik', Bautzen, 2008, nos. Z 140, 141 and 142). The treatment of the perspective and handling of the wash in the present sheet is also similar to Nathe drawings of 1791, see Fröhlich Z 578 and 579.
