- Text from Martin Hopkinson, 'Italian Prints 1875-1975', BMP, 2007, no. 20:
This portrait of the bespectacled, elderly, German realist painter, printmaker and illustrator (1815-1905), relates very closely to the oil painting, now in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, which Boldini painted on a visit to Berlin in 1895. The Italian artist had long admired Menzel, whom he had met first in Berlin in 1886. This impression is one of only nine pulled during Boldini's lifetime. A further nine were printed in Paris by Eugène Delâtre in 1934 for the artist's widow. These were numbered 10/18 to 18/18. Boldini used the other side of this plate for a drypoint portrait of Madame Jules Weil - Picard.
Presented anonymously, 2002.
