- Lit: Rolf Biedermann, 'Die Zeichnungen des Johann Heinrich Schoenfeld' in Jahrb. der staatlichen Kunstsammlung Baden-Wuerttemberg, VIII, 1971, pp.119-194; p.176
The attribution of this drawing to Schönfeldt was confirmed by Heinrich Geissler, in a pencilled annotation on the old mount. It was formerly in the collection of the princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein, Harburg. Schönfeldt is known to have worked in the new castle (built 1679) at Oettingen for the Prince Oettingen-Spielberg between 1681 and 1683 (see Herbert Pee, 1971, p.255) and it is conceivable that the drawing has remained in the collection of the family every since. It was possibly made in connection with a wall decoration there, such as a series of seasons, which has since been destroyed or over-painted by subsequent artists.
There is a good collection of drawings by Schönfeldt from all stages of his career and his workshop in Stuttgart, where there is also a drawing by him of Democritus from the Oettingen-Wallerstein collection, see H.M. Kaulbach (ed), 'Deutsche Zeichnungen vom Mittelalter bis zum Barock: Bestandskatalog Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, 2007, pp 11-12, 268-296, cat.no 572 (Democritus).
