- A humming top is called in French a "toupie d'Allemagne". The idea behind this satire is that the Condé, like a child, is kept amused while the foreign powers and the Emperor Leopold II shun plans for armed intervention. Toys are often associated with émigrés and the Condés in satirical prints of this period (see "Taking Liberties: Satirical Prints of the French Revolution", exh.cat., Chester Beatty Library, Dublin 1989, cat.no.49, where this print is dated 1791, though it seems rather to belong with other prints of 1792 against the emigré army).
