- The artist was a pupil of Malchair and travelled on the continent in 1803-4, and again in 1815-18; he died at Stowe in 1818. Most works by this amateur came originally from a group at the Walker Galleries in 1947 (see I. Williams, p. 93). This drawing is on paper watermarked 'PORTAL & Co 1798'.
