- Curator's comments
- Copied from one of the now much damaged fresco by Raphael and his school in the window embrasure of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Palace. These decorations were copied in engravings by Étienne Baudet (1638-1711), and the present drawing is possibly after the title-page of his series of prints, omitting the central scene, rather than the fresco itself. See Peter Fuhring and Femke Speelberg, 'Verscheijde Constige Vindingen: de collectie ornamentprenten van Nanne Ottema', 2009, cat.27, where Baudet's print is reproduced.
