A crow, holding a cheese in its beak, is perched on a tree at the bottom of which waits a fox; fountain decorated with putto riding dolphin on the left finished state before letters of illustration to 'Le corbeau et le renard', Fable II in volume I, page 4 of La Fontaine's "Fables choisies" (Paris: Desaint & Saillant/ Durand, 1755). c.1755

- This is from a group of illustrations by various engravers after Jean-Baptiste Oudry for La Fontaine's "Fables choisies" published in 4 vols (Paris: Desaint & Saillant / Durand, 1755-59). All are proofs of varying states before letters. A copy of the 4-volume published edition of 1755-59 is in P&D (1869,0508.3...277) under c161.d.9-12.
