Chicago's best known work, 'The Dinner Party' (1979) addressed concerns of feminist identity in western civilisation. The artist visited Rome for the first time in 1982 and was struck by the monumental scale of renaissance painting. She re-taught herself oil painting and drew constantly from the model resulting in a series of large-scale paintings, entitled 'PowerPlay'(1982-7), which examine concepts of masculinity. This drawing relates to one of the paintings from the series.
