- Curator's comments
- Ariane James-Sarazin pointed out that the portrait is not of Jean Ranc, as had been previously thought, but his father Antoine Ranc (1634-1716), the master of Hyacinthe Rigaud. The drawing is most likely a record made after Rigaud's painted portrait of Antoine Ranc of 1696 now in the musée des Beaux-Arts de Narbonne (inv. 859-3-27). Who made the drawing is difficult to establish, but the likeliest candidate is one of Rigaud's assistants, such as Jean Ranc.
