- This is from a series of 16 plates after Stradanus (New Hollstein 135-151), numbered 3-18, which was published with an engraved frontispiece and a preface in letterpress as 'Encomium Musices' by Philips Galle in Antwerp about 1589-1590. Most plates are engraved by Adriaen Collaert, one is made by Theodoor Galle (no.16). The Latin verses are by Johannes Boghe (Bochius). The BM set lacks the frontispiece and preface, see 1996,1103.21-36. A complete bound set is held by the British Library in the Hirsch collection (under pressmark Hirsch III-734). The preparatory drawing for this plate is in the Royal Library, Brussels, inv.no.S.IV.37868.
