- This volume of plates is bound between marbled paper boards in a green half-leather binding with the title stamped in gilt on a green leather piece pasted to the front cover. There is no title page to this volume. The set is mixed, with plates 1 to 4 being proofs before letters, and 5 to 16 being lettered and numbered. All the plates are on India laid paper. The BM possesses a second loose set of these plates (1870,0514.1283 to 1298).
The etchings are after a cycle of frescoes on "The Stages of Human Life and the Virtues" executed between 1839 and 1847 by Edward Bendemann in the throne room of the Royal Palace in Dresden. P&D already possesses a bound later publication by the same engraver after the frescoes in the concert and ballroom of the palace.
