- Curator's comments
- According to the 1993 Sotheby's catalogue, the drawing was in a private collection in Germany (bought 16 February 1931). Anon. sale, Amsterdam, Christie's, 1 December 1986, lot 82, where bought by F.C. Butôt.
For what little is known about the life and work of this draughtsman see Dumas, 2000. Drawings are distinctive; always in brown ink on vellum within framing lines, usually signed, and often retain substantial margins. Examples in public collections are rare (one is at the Rijksprentenkabinet and another at the Uffizi), but two further drawings by the artist were sold in these Rooms, 3 April 1978, lot 68, and 21 March 1977, lot 22.
