- Text from Frances Carey, 'Modern Scandinavian Prints', BMP 1997, no.90:
'Beat generation' and the following subject are early proofs of two of the plates chosen by Jorn for the series of twenty-three etchings from 1939-45 that he had reprinted by R. Tamburro in Paris in 1960 under the title 'Occupations', published in an edition of fifty by the Galerie Rive Gauche (vdL.45-67); the venture was part of Jorn's increasing desire to preserve a record of his early work in connection with the archival holding he was creating for Silkeborg. By the time the full edition was executed there had been a noticeable deterioration in the surface of this particular plate, which had become densely pitted; but the chance effect evidently did not deter Jorn from its inclusion.
Although the prints were executed only in a casual manner in the first instance, without forming part of a predetermined series, they are an invaluable guide to the evolution of Jorn's pictorial vocabulary in which the influence of Klee is very much apparent. The titles for the individual plates as well as the series as a whole were not applied until the date of their proper publication in 1960, when 'Beat generation' was the only one given in English, the others being in French.
