- Text from Stephen Coppel, 'Picasso and Printmaking in Paris', (exh.cat.), South Bank Centre, 1998, no.87.
The third of four plates which Picasso completed on the same day, 26 May 1968, this print is from a series of 347 etchings made in 1968. Like many from this group, it was inspired by 'La Célestine', a picaresque novel by Fernando de Rojas, first published in 1501. Picasso also produced 66 etched illustrations of this Spanish classic for a livre d'artiste edition published by Atelier Commelynck. Here, Picasso has experimented with sugar aquatint on a greased plate to create a mottled effect, particularly noticeable on the costumes. This impression is from the Galerie Louise Leiris edition printed in 1969, after the steel facing of the copper plate; it is one of 50 impressions printed on wove Rives paper, signed and numbered from 1/50 to 50/50.
