This was attributed to Sabbatini by Nicholas Turner who suggested that it was a preliminary idea for the painting of the Trinity now in S. Stefano, Bologna (see J. Winkelmann, 'Lorenzo Sabatini detto Lorenzino da Bologna' in V. Fortunati Pietrantonio et al., 'Pittura Bolognese del '500', II, Bologna, 1986, p. 640, illustrated on p. 668). The composition of the drawing is close to that of the painting, but it does not fit Sabbatini's style, based on comparison with his documented studies, and it does not look particularly Bolognese. The squaring and the lively handling suggests it is a preparatory study for a composition of the Trinity; for the time being it is kept under Sabbatini until a more plausible attribution is advanced.
