- Curator's comments
- Identified as a fake by Byam Shaw.
Joachim Jacoby commented in May 2006 that this is related to a drawing by Hendrik Goudt reproduced in the Witt, which sold at the Beurdeley sale, Petit's, Paris, 8-10 June, 1920, lot 223 (as by Jan Lievens; attributed by Robert Witt to Elsheimer; dimensions 135 x 160mm, with a collector's mark bottom right). The compositions are identical; but the present sheet is smaller, so it is was possibly copied after the Paris drawing - perhaps at the time of the sale. There are further related drawings: 1) Haboldt, 2-28 November 1987, then Karl & Faber, Munich, 4. December 2001, no. 30: c. 140 x 160 mm; no collector's mark, different pen-work to 1992,1003.175 and 2) a further drawing that sold at Drouot, Paris, 27 May 1987 (sale catalogue needs to be checked, as this drawing may be identical with the one reproduced at the Witt).
